Street Fighter IV

Post by Roosetifer on Sat Jan 17, 2009 4:11 am

Street Fighter IV is a 2008 fighting game produced by Capcom. It is the first brand new numbered Street Fighter game released by Capcom for the arcades since 1999. The coin-operated arcade game was released in Japan on July 18, 2008 with North American arcades importing the machines by August. Home versions are currently scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 12, February 17, and February 20, 2009, in Japan, the US and Europe respectively. A Windows version will follow during the second quarter of 2009.

While Street Fighter IV features models and backgrounds rendered in 3D, the gameplay remains on a traditional 2D plane. Producer Yoshinori Ono has stated that he wanted to keep the game closer to Street Fighter II. A new system called "Focus Attacks" ("Saving Attack" for the Japanese version) has been introduced, as well as Ultra moves. The traditional six-button control scheme returns, with new features and special moves integrated into the input system, mixing classic gameplay with additional innovations.

Focus Attacks
Focus Attacks, known as "Saving System" in the Japanese version, is a new system that is being introduced in Street Fighter IV. The focus attack is a move that allows the player to absorb an attack and launch a counter attack, and it is performed by pressing the medium punch and kick buttons simultaneously. There are two phases to the attack. In the first phase, the player will shift into a new stance, at which point he is able to absorb one attack from the opponent. The second phase is the counter attack. The longer the player holds down the medium punch and kick buttons the more powerful the attack will be. If the buttons are held for long enough the attack will cause the opponent to crumple slowly to the ground, allowing the player to follow up with a free hit. If the buttons are held for longer still the focus attack will become unblockable. Attacks that were absorbed during the first phase of the focus attack still cause damage to the player; however, life lost from the opponent's attack will be gained back afterward. In addition, during the first phase of the focus attack the player may perform a dash either forward or backward to cancel the focus attack. Finally, at the cost of half the super combo gauge, many special moves can be canceled into a focus attack. By executing a focus attack during the special move, the animation of the move will be cut short and go instantly into the focus attack animation. This allows players with precise timing to cancel special moves into focus attacks, and in turn cancel focus attacks into the forward dash, resulting in new combo possibilities. If a special move is blocked by the opponent, the new system allows players to cancel the blocked move with a focus attack, and then cancel the focus attack by dashing backward safely away from the opponent.

Ono has stated that this system was incorporated in order to shift the emphasis away from combos and toward a more realistic system he has compared to boxing, in which "the skill is in reading your opponent's move before he starts moving ... We haven't forgotten about combos and linked moves, but focus makes it so that you have to read your opponent." The system aims to make ground attacks as viable a way of approaching opponents as jumping was in previous games. The focus system is a core part of Street Fighter IV's gameplay.

Ultra Combos

Crimson Viper executing her Burst Time Ultra Combo on GuileIn addition to powered up versions of special moves introduced in previous Street Fighter games such as Super Combos and EX Special Moves, the game also introduces a new type of powered-up special move officially dubbed the Ultra Combo. Ultra Combos are long and cinematic moves featuring a lengthy combination of punches, kicks and other moves. Just as there is a Super Combo gauge, there is also an Ultra Combo gauge (officially known as the "Revenge Gauge"), but whereas the Super gauge fills as the player hits an opponent, the Revenge Gauge fills when one takes damage from the opponent. Along with the Super Combos, Ultra Combos are one of the only times the camera breaks from its normal fixed position to show a more dynamic, cinematic view of the gameplay.

Just a note, you put a picture of Gouken and called him Cammy.
And your picture for the special edition is wrong. Should be:

I dunno if I'll get special edition or not. The costumes and DVD thing are probably the only things worth getting it for, and the models I guess.

Can't wait for it though.

Got it on pre-order for £24.35. £29.99 original price with a fiver off in points. Pretty good deal. Anyone know if the costumes with the special edition will be available for download at some point?

Anyone got any character preferences by the way? Mine's Guile, all the way. Rose and Crimson Viper look interesting though.

Well I mainly use Chun-Li, Honda, Balrog and Guile in SFII, and then there's characters like Sakura who I use for fun in Alpha/Crossovers and there's Ken and Ryu, who everyone like.

As this is my first Street Fighter, I'll just get the standard edition. But I'll probably use Chun-Li and Fei Long

I have Street Fighter 2 Champions Edition on my Gametap but its really difficult because I can't find a way of getting to the Combo list which is a right pain in the arse.
I'll probably ask for the CE of this for my birthday in June just because I wont have the money at the moment.

Let me say that again.

I've already pre-ordered the PS3 version however I have a lot of friends who are going to get the 360 version and so I'm going to buy the 360 one to play against them but only at a later date when the price is lower.

Happy?

I was getting this but then I found out 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand was coming out that day so I cancelled my preorder and got that instead. If Capcom wants to win me over I need to see clips of Balrog saying 'Die you motherfucking cocksucking pussy' and Ken going 'Fierce Shoryuken in the mothafuckin face bitches'.

Nearly a quarter of the achievements are for online play. I hate it when developers do this. When will they realise that not everyone has access to Gold or just plain don't like playing online.

You mean it rewards those who play over Live Razz

I have Live yet have hardly any online achievements so your argument good sir is flawed.

Anyway, any of the online achievements can be gained in Private/public so you can gain them by just playing your friends.

I like online achievements. They encourage you, especially with a game like this, to play people with different levels of skill, different preferences and different techniques in order for you to develop and grow as a player. You can't really do that by playing the same people.

Ive done like 200 something ranked on SSFIITHDR so plus quite a few private so that is pretty atainable.

That doesn't make sense though. You said they can be gained by playing your friends and if that's true then I should have every achievement in SF2 HDR (If it worked in SF2 HDR) but I don't.

I think Ross is right, by the looks of it, all of the SF4 online achievements are atainable in either ranked or public, obviously apart from the "win 1 ranked match" and "win 3/5/7/10(? I forget exactly how many matches) Ranked matches in a row".
