Gears of War 2 - 7 New Maps + New Campaign Mission

Post by Ryuhuik on Thu May 07, 2009 4:07 am

As if they haven't put enough DLC out already...

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/980/980049p1.html

Microsoft and Epic Games have announced a massive upcoming add-on for Gears of War 2 that will contain new multiplayer maps as well as a brand new campaign mission. All of the content will be made available both at retail as a code for a download and through Xbox Live separately.

The new campaign level is a deleted chapter titled Road to Ruin. In it, Marcus and Dom will return to Locust Hollow for a mission that can be played in the traditional, action-packed way or in what is described as an "all-new stealth mode."

Playing Gears last night and some guy was telling me about it. He also said that it had all the maps in it thus ripping me off, thank god they haven't. I also want more than 1 mission, a whole Act would be better.

Wrong.
Back in March, rumors flew about a new batch of downloadable content for Gears of Wars 2 called Dark Corners, but Epic denied that such DLC existed. Turns out that they were absolutely correct. Dark Corners is not just DLC. It's a new map pack being included in the Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection, available exclusively at retail worldwide on July 28th. The collection includes all of the Gears 2 DLC to date, along with Dark Fronts, a collection of seven new multiplayer maps which you can find detailed below and a new single player chapter titled "Road to Ruin".

In order to make the pack worthwhile to those who've already downloaded the majority of the Gears 2 DLC, the package also contains an introduction from Cliff Bleszinski for "Road to Ruin", a collectible poster, a strategy guide, and a custom Xbox Live theme.

And the price? $19.99, £14.99, or €19.99, depending on who you're paying for the privilege of taking the package home. A great value for those who've yet to download map one for the game, though things get a bit sketchy the more you've already purchased.

The Dark Corners DLC will also be available for download via Xbox Live on July 28th for 1600 Microsoft points, which is also $20.

Unless of course you're going to buy the DLC at the same price, thus making you stupid. Don't really see how they're ripping you off, but GG on trying to take EPIC rewarding their loyal fans and make it look like they're doing something BAD Neutral.

Oh, and details on the new maps:
The seven new multiplayer maps in the "Gears of War 2: Dark Corners" Game Add-on are:

* Allfathers Garden: Honor the sacred grounds of the Coalition founders in this explosive map, where powerful weapons catalyze fast and furious action at this COG landmark.
* Memorial: Set near the Eternal Flame, which pays tribute to the fallen soldiers on the battlefield, a hard-fought battle ensues at the Tomb of Unknowns. Putting their flank formation and evasive skills to the test, players will fight to control the Boomshot.
* Sanctuary: Once a peaceful ground for reflection and remembrance, all that remains of the Sanctuary is the chill of death. Feast your eyes on the arsenal of weapons available as you make your way through the tight paths and blind corners of the Locust-damaged temple corridors.
* War Machine: In the abandoned train station that once served as a hub for travel, players will need to master the Longshot, Mulcher and Boomshot weapons to advance the fight while evading fire from the platforms above.
* Highway: Take the fight deep into the Locust Hollow in the complex passages of this underground highway system brimming with enemy vermin. Stick together, separate the enemy and have an exit strategy ready or it'll be a one-way trip.
* Way Station: Sitting in limbo between death and "processing" are Locust way stations filled with fallen COG soldiers. Tread lightly and practice patience as it's better to sacrifice firepower for stealth while navigating this minefield of hidden grenades.
* Nowhere: Set in the middle of what was once a destination for weary desert travellers, the land is now barren and devoid of life. Pick off your enemies with the Longshot sniper rifle and make your way to the stairwell with a well-fortified team during this intense firefight.

All my info taken from here btw.

As for me? Even though I already have both map packs, I'll get the disc, mainly for the extras. Fantastic news for those who don't have the maps, and even if you do it's still a good deal.

Good deal? Anyone buying the digital download is getting EPICcally screwed. They should be charging 1200 points or so for the digital version, seeing as it doesn't have Combustable / Snowblind / Flashback.

I probably won't buy this, I rarely play the game as it is, and I've still yet to touch the single player campaign. Plus looking at that release date, I'll be on holiday and miss the rush for it as well.

In short, I applaud Epic for the content and retail distribution, but not the way they're milking their fanboys. Like you Miek. Razz

Its the way games are these days, release the base game then add DLC upon DLC. Still, looks worth it if your into GoW2 funnage.

Edit: Why negative rep?

Slazo, you're a tight arse with your MP. Anything above 800MP and you moan (apart from Castle Crashers). 1600MP for 7 maps and a campaign mission is brilliant value. Neutral

And if people are stupid enough to buy the download at near enough the same price as the disc version, then that's their fault. Like I said earlier, it's pretty much the same price and comes with some nice extras (concidering they didn't HAVE to add anything), so... lolwat?

I think 'ripped-off' was the wrong phrase. Yeah the content looks fab and I can't wait for the new level but, if I brought the maps on release and someone waits a few months and can get them for free I don't really think it's fair.

No point dwelling on it as my complaining won't change a thing, I really hope you can as Theron Marcus and Dom online. Marcus looks like a mushroom Razz

Tight arse? No, I just don't throw money away buying stuff I won't like. I went down the path of buying stuff willy nilly many years ago, and quickly learnt that leaves you wth bugger all money for the stuff you really want, hence why I'm such a "tight arse".

I agree, in principal, 1600 points should be good, but if you're going to charge exactly the same price digitally and through retail, with the digital consumers likely already having Flashback at least, then its a screwjob to make them pay the same for much less content. And I don't class a blurb from Cliffy B, something that will instantly be posted online, an enticement that adds value.

As I said, this is just abuse of fanboys who've already gone and downloaded all the maps and will happily buy this even though half of it they already own.

Edit - Oh, and as for 1200 points Arcade games, blame Braid. Now EVERYONE thinks they can get away with it. ¬_¬

"Fanboys" are not getting screwed. =/
The way I see it, you're paying for the stuff no-one has and the other maps are free. The maps will be free at some point anyway.

If it bothers you that much, don't buy it, simple.

Whatever happened to the idea of putting as much into a game as possible and making what's on the disk paramount to anything else? DLC makes developers lazy and more recently greedy with Fallout 3's DLC is the best example of this. The DLC in 2/3 cases has been rendered unplayable not through bad game design but through sheer laziness.

"Oh we'll push it out now and fix any problems later"

If that had happened 10 years ago the game would of been sunk. Your spending hard earned money on a half arsed job and tbf it's ridiculous.

In the case of Gears of War why is it that within 6 months of launch you have to invest yet more money beyond your £40 investment because apparently you didn't enough just buying the game. Surely the fact you bought the game should be good enough for them and you should be rewarded, not punished more in the pocket.

I'm surprised no-one has played the 'sort your multiplayer out before shoving DLC out' card.
